As a professional, you might assume that you shouldn’t take every interview that comes your way. After all, if the job doesn’t seem like a great fit or you aren’t actively looking for an opportunity, wouldn’t it be a waste of your time to participate?

While it may seem like the best thing to do is to decline the interview, that isn’t always the case. There are plenty of reasons why saying “yes” is a great idea, even if it’s just for the practice.

If you are wondering why you should make an effort to attend every interview you can, here’s what you need to know.

1. Interviewing is a Skill

Most professionals don’t inherently know how to interview. Even if you are generally articulate and comfortable meeting new people, interviewing is its own paradigm, and you don’t encounter it on a daily basis.

As with any skill, practice typically makes perfect (or better, at least). While you can get some experience by coming up with responses to questions you find online or working with a friend to hone your abilities, these approaches aren’t exact representations of the real thing. If you genuinely want to enhance your capabilities, going to as many interviews as possible is usually the best approach.

Every interview is unique. While you might find droves of sample questions online, any company could present you with one that you wouldn’t expect.

By going to more interviews, you are exposing yourself to as many questions as possible. Not only will this help you think better on your feet, but it also gives you points to consider after the fact. Then, if you happen to cross paths with that question again, you’ll be prepared.

3. You Can Test Different Approaches

Most interview questions don’t have “right” answers. Instead, there are several options that could work well. The issue is, when you go into an interview, you typically only get to try using one.

When you accept every interview that comes by, you can try a variety of responses over time. Then, you can observe the hiring managers as you answer and gauge which ones have the strongest impact. In the end, you’ll have data that can allow you to optimize your answers, increasing the odds that you’ll be successful when your goal is to land a new job.

4. You Might Find Your Dream Job

Sometimes, a job that doesn’t seem great on paper is exceptional in reality. The problem is, if you decline the interview, you won’t have a chance to find that out.

By going to the interview, you get to learn more about the hiring manager and the company. Along the way, you pick up insights about the position and the company’s culture, too, and might discover that the opportunity brings more to the table that you initially assumed.

Essentially, if you had said “no” to the interview, you’d have missed out on the opportunity entirely. But, by saying “yes,” you incidentally stumbled across your dream job.

Ultimately, accepting every interview is usually a good idea. Even in the worst-case scenario, it’s still good practice, and that alone makes it worthwhile.
